Eloquent Pixels by Simon Christen

My name is Simon Christen, I am a professional animator and an aspiring photographer.

I grew up in Bern, Switzerland. During high school I was introduced to computer graphics (CG) and started playing around with programs such as Photoshop and 3D Studio Max. I quickly became fascinated with CG and threw myself into learning as much as I could. Eventually I decided to pursue an education in this new found passion and leave my home to study at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. Since graduating, with a BFA in Animation, I have been fortunate to work at studios like Pixar and Disney. I am currently an animator at Pixar.

In the past few years I have developed a passion for photography. It started as just browsing portfolios I admired; wondering how their photos were taken, processed, and treated. Eventually I decided to buy my first DSLR and began to experiment on my own, taking thousands of photos to only be satisfied with very few. Over time I have found my eye in some ways, feeling excited each time I catch something worth sharing.

So far I have focused on ”Nature & Landscape” and ”Urban Exploring” photography.

My love for traveling and being outdoors has taken me to some stunning places around the world and given me great opportunities to take photographs. I can sit in a spot for hours watching the light change, waiting and hoping for that rare moment which illuminates the scene in a unique way.

As humans we have the urge to design everything. Once something becomes forgotten and nature starts claiming it back, a very interesting mix of human design and decay happens. I am fascinated by this mix of intricate shapes, unique patterns and colors.

Photography combines two of my passions; being outdoors and CG. Photography is also the perfect creative balance to animation for me. Animation forces me to study movement in great detail, where as photography focuses on a split second in time.

I hope to continue traveling, exploring and experimenting with my photography. And I am looking forward to sharing it with you.
